THE PUREST FORM OF YOGA:
Why We Practice Without Music or Props
The whole idea to Yoga is to accept who and what you are and as teachers especially, not judge the concept of the physical practice.
There is also the idea to challenge the ego and sometimes the challenge is in resting and accepting the idea that you might not get as far in a posture as the person next to you or the instructor for that matter.
THE ANCIENT TEXTS DO NOT MENTION LEVELS, PROPS OR MUSIC
If you look back in the ancient yogic texts, nowhere does it mention levels, props or music. They were simply written with a "do what you can do" approach with an emphasis on the word practice.
Although we do believe there is place for devices and props in an effort to rehabilitate an injury, we don't believe it is in Yoga. As long as you let the instructor know of an injuries, listen to your limitations and let go of the ego you should be fine.
THE MUSIC OF BREATH
The answer to why we don't use music is simple. The music in your practice should be your breath. Music is used as an enjoyable way to release our day. We are able to tune out any emotions going on inside and submerge ourselves in the sound.
Through actively listening to the ujjayi breath we are able to move deeper both physically and spiritually. Think of Yoga as a physical way to get in touch with the spirit, instead of a spiritual way to get in touch with the body. A "working in" rather than a "working out".
